By Edward Blanco
Bassist Jon Burr has performed with some of the best musicians in the business ever since Charlie Mingus asked him to sit in at the famed Village Vanguard at the tender age of sixteen. He continues that tradition with “Just Can’t Wait”, his newest album and self produced project of original songs nicely packaged in a CD/DVD set employing a host of vocalist, including his own thirteen-year old daughter, Tyler. Other singers appearing on the recording include Ty Stephens who performs on seven tracks, Yaala Balin, Hilary Kole and Laurel Masse. The DVD, which was recorded at another renowned New York jazz venue, The Birdland and features his core band of Houston Person and Joel Frahm on the saxes, John Hart on guitar and pianist Jon Davis , stays pretty close to the music on the session recorded CD. Burr does a marvelous job capturing vocal jazz with a flavor of the big band sound using an all-star cast of musicians. Aside from his core20band, the personnel also brings in the talents of saxophonists Anat Cohen and Bob Mintzer, Dominick Farinacci on the trumpet, drummer Anthony Pinciotti and others. There are no instrumentals on this disc but the performance from Burr and the world-class musical support contained in this recording, in some respects, outshines the vocalists. But in the end. it is the vocalists that carry the day here delivering one dynamic voicing after another making“Just Can’t Wait” one of the better jazz vocal albums in the market. If vocals is not to your preferred style, this CD may not be for you. Year: 2008 |
